RoadSideAmerica > Mark Newlon  > Roadside Fun > Roadside Fun -- Western States
One of the great pleasures in our lives has been the visiting and photographing of roadside attractions and pop-culture landmarks. Here are some highlights. Some of these pictures are poor scans of old pictures, so great photography is not the point here. We've had lots of fun visiting these places over the years, and we hope that you'll enjoy seeing them as well. Since there's no convenient way to organize these pictures, I've organized them alphabetically by city.

Arizona

Interstate 10 in Arizona has long been home to a most interesting roadside attraction: The Thing? You have to pay fifty cents or so to find out what The Thing? is, but it's well worth it.
Somewhere in Arizona

Santa's Desert Retreat in Arizona was closed by the time we motored through.
Austin, Texas

The True Hope Church of Jesus Christ and Hot Dog Stand in Austin, Texas, appeared to be out of business when this picture was taken several years ago. And someone had scratched out the bit about the hot dog stand.
Baker, California

Baker, California, is the self-proclaimed Gateway to Death Valley, and also home to the World's Largest Thermometer, I guess because it gets so hot there. Here, Sharon is showing us that it's fifty-three degrees.
Blanchard, North Dakota

Three miles west of Blanchard, North Dakota, stands the world's tallest manmade structure, the KVLY TV mast. We visited this on the anniversary of a significant day in its history -- August 8, 2006. This was the 15th anniversary of the collapse of the Warszawa Radio Mast in Konstantynow, Poland, formerly the world's tallest man-made structure. When the Warszawa mast failed it catapulted the North Dakota mast into first place. My friend Ari has pointed out that Konstantynow has since boasted the world's LONGEST tower.
Bottineau, ND -- Tommy the Turtle is arguable the world's largest turtle who drives a snowmobile. We stopped in Bottineau to view this sculpture not because we particularly wanted to, but because it happened to be on the way to the giant turtle we really wanted to see in Dunseith. I must admit, though, that this remarkable sculpture was truly impressive.
Browning, MT -- On January 23 - 24, 1916 in Browning, Montana the record for the most dramatic 24 hour temperature difference was set. In this time period the temperature fell over 100° from 44°F to -56°F. Sadly, Browning hasn't constructed any large edifices, such as gigantic twin concrete faux-thermometers, illustrating the scope of this historical meteorological event. Heck, they don't even have a plaque. Still, 90+ years after the fact, we were there.
Carefree, Arizona

Brian and I pay homage to the World's Largest Sundial in Carefree, Arizona, a gift from the local Kiwanis Club in 1976 in honor of their fallen member, Kenyon Turner Palmer. Kenyon was one of the founders of Carefree in 1958.
Casselton, North Dakota

Casselton is haughty over the presence of the World's Largest Stack of Cans within its confines.
